Another reason to visit Lhasa in August is to witness one of the main festivals of the year – the Shoton or yogurt festival. The festival is celebrated on the 29th day of the 6th month of the Tibetan calendar, and it usually falls on August.

The main celebration happens in Sera and Drepung Monasteries where monks unfold huge thangkas – Buddha paintings to give blessings to all visitors.

Shoton festival always attracts many pilgrims to Lhasa. That’s why it is a great time to see many Tibetans wearing traditional clothes, their finest jewelry, and other accessories.

WHAT TO WEAR IN LHASA IN AUGUST

The weather in Lhasa in August remains hot during the daytime and pleasantly warm at night. If you plan to wear short sleeve shirts, remember to bring good sunscreen with at least SPF 30, and even better SPF 50 or above. Although it might be hot during the daytime, we don’t recommend bringing shorts as all religious places require wearing long pants or long skirts. We also ask not to bring clothes that might seem too revealing, as monasteries won’t allow the visit in such clothes. For chilly mornings and evenings, you should pack a light jacket or a sweater.

Since it might rain even during the daytime in Lhasa, it is best to have an umbrella, rain poncho, or a rain jacket. Consider packing waterproof shoes, such as leather sneakers or trekking boots.
