SHIGATSE LOCATION

Lhasa to Shigatse:
The longer and more scenic route: 360 km / 224 miles.
Shorter route via Friendship Highway: 271 km /168 miles.

Gyantse to Shigatse: about 90km / 56 miles

Shigatse to Everest Base Camp: approximately 340 km / 211 miles.

Shigatse is located on many important routes in Tibet. If you are traveling with a group tour to Mount Everest or Mount Kailash, or journeying from Lhasa to the Nepal border, you will be staying in Shigatse.

It is located to the southwest of Lhasa and it takes almost a full day to travel from Lhasa to Shigatse via a popular scenic route visiting Yamdrok Lake, Karola Glacier, and Gyantse along the way. A shorter road via Friendship Highway takes 6 hours respecting the 60 km/ h speed limit.

We book rooms in the Gesar Hotel or a similar-class hotel for most of our group tours. It is a Tibetan-owned hotel. Gesar is a very comfortable hotel with 2 buildings: one with spacious rooms in the traditional Tibetan style and a newer building with rooms in the Western style. In each room, you will find 24-hour hot water, Wi-Fi, extra blankets, an air conditioner, a tea kettle, and a flat-screen TV. A good breakfast buffet is served every morning.
